Jan de Vries has dinner in an American restaurant
Around 6:00 p.m. Jan de Vries enters
the restaurant of his choice. At the door, he sees a sign: "Please wait
till we seat you". A waitress brings him to his table which took only a
minute.
One minute later, another waitress
comes to Jan’s table and introduces herself with: “How are you doing? I am
Mary, your waitress for this evening. What do you want to drink?”.
Jan
starts to tell her that he is doing fine, but he sees at her eyes that she only
wants to know what he wants to drink. He orders a beer. She asks him
if he wants a Bass, Sam Adams or a Coors Light. Without knowing the
difference, Jan orders a Bass.
The waitress returns with the menu
and the beer. She immediately describes the eight specials of the day
and leaves the table. All this goes so fast, Jan has no clue what the
specials are.
The beer is great and big (16oz =
0,45 liter).
Another minute later the waitress
returns to take his order. He orders “the third of the specials” (having
no clue what it is, but he wants to go “local” anyhow).
About 10 minutes later he receives
his steak. That was huge. Jan thinks he is a big eater, but
this 24 oz steak is bigger than he ever has seen before. He starts
eating with knife and fork and both hands on the table. He feels the
eyes looking at him, although he is eating so nicely.
When he is done, about half of the
steak is still on his plate. It again takes a minute before the
waitress comes to clean the table and takes the order for the desert. Jan
decides not to have desert.
After waiting for no more than 2
minutes the waitress returns with the check and the remainder of the
steak in a doggybag.
He leaves the cash on the table (Jan
is so
enthousiastic about the food, the quantity and that he can take home
what he hasn’t finished, he decides to tip generously: 10%). Jan was
surprised when the waitress asked him what was wrong with the dinner. He
answered everything was great.
John leaves the restaurant around 6:45 pm. |

John Doe has dinner in an Dutch Restaurant
Around 6:00 p.m. John Doe enters the
restaurant of his choice and waits until someone comes to seat him.
After a couple of minutes, he starts to feel uncomfortable and gives the
waitress a gentle hint.
Another couple of minutes later, she
brings John to a table and asks him what he wants to drink. John felt
thirsty, so he ordered a cool glass of beer.
The waitress returns with the menu
(in English!) and the beer. She leaves the table and obviously forgets
to mention the specialties of the day.
The beer tastes great (the real
Dutch Heineken!), but the glass is so small (6 oz = 0,17 liter) that it
is empty
after the first nip.
John looks at his watch for the
first time, because it takes forever before the waitress returns to take
the order (and to bring another glass of beer). He orders his steak
(avoiding the risk associated with ordering the unknown local food) and
another “sample” of Heineken.
Now John’s patience is really
tested. It takes half an hour before he receives his steak, at least
what he expects to be the steak. He cuts the far too small piece of
meat, puts his knife aside and starts to eat with his fork in the right
hand and his left hand on his lap. He feels the eyes looking at him,
although he is eating so nicely.
When he is done, it again takes
forever before the waitress comes to clean the table and take the order
for the desert. John decides not to have desert and expects the check to
be brought in seconds.
After waiting for at least 15
minutes he starts to get annoyed and hints the waitress asking for the
check.
He leaves the cash on the table (he waited so long this evening, he
decides to limit the tip to 15%). John is surprised how enthousiastic
the waitress waved him out.
It is around 9:00 pm. When he leaves he restaurant, he
iss still hungry
and decides to go for a Big Mac. |
